UDD: PhD in Medical Sciences

The PhD in Medical Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine of Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, is a full-time program that requires exclusive dedication, which aims to train health professionals providing them with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform scientific research autonomously at a high level, including the presentation and publication of their results. It focuses on health and illnesses of people, without excluding basic research to identify fundamental mechanisms underlying pathologies.

The orientation of this PhD is translational. In other words, it is directed to solving our society’s health problems, optimizing the link among the laboratory work, the clinical practice and the public health of population.

The program is by definition international, since the relevant research is global and it is expected that students can perform internships abroad and establish networking in their research areas. Also our laboratories will welcome visits of teachers and students of international postgraduate programs.

The Institutional Improvement Program of the Universidad del Desarrollo (PMI, in its Spanish acronym) “Health Innovation” supports the PhD in Medical Sciences program. Its students receive maintenance grants throughout their studies, plus tuition and enrolment scholarships.

The program requires full-time and dedication, and lasts four years. It takes place on the campus of the Faculty of Medicine of the Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, in Avenida Las Condes, Santiago.

The first year includes theoretical-practical courses of mandatory nature and two of elective nature, in which two research units are added.

In the second year, students begin her doctoral thesis, which will last approximately three years. All the subjects in the first year, research units and Examination Candidacy must be approved before beginning the formal process of the thesis.

Each semester means an average of 35 credits, equivalent to 1,050 hours of total student work.

The Faculty of Medicine will provide support scholarships until the accreditation of the program to the National Accreditation Commission (CNA, in its Spanish acronym) is obtained in order to apply for the support of the doctoral scholarship program Conicyt.

During the third semester, the PhD candidates shall exercise teaching work through undergraduate or postgraduate assistantships.

The PhD thesis may be on laboratory research and, in qualified cases, on clinical research. It may take place in the following locations:

  • Faculty of Medicine Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, Lo Barnechea.
